The abbey was founded in the 11th century, but the Augustinian monastery section of the abbey dates back to the 10th century.

The Augustinians were succeeded by the Benedictine monks who developed the abbey by buying fields, bringing privileges and changing the architectonic structure thus enhancing its defence features.
