Under Venetian rule the Church of St. Anne (1077 metres above sea level), played a relevant role in the defence of the "Sella di Carnizza" and "Sella di Guardia" Passes through which it was possible to reach the Slovenian Isonzo Valley.

To this end in the past the valley hosted a military garrison and fortifications in Stolvizza and San Giorgio.
