Since 1175 Castelmonte has been a pilgrimage destination for all those devoted to the Virgin "of the Mount".
The hill on top of which the Sanctuary stands is also known as the "old mountain" or "the Mount of St. Michael Archangel", due to a wooden statue located in the crypt of the church.
